E’ stata lanciata con successo la Sonda della NASA – ULA “Parker Solar Probe”, dopo un rinvio del lancio di 24 ore dovuto a problemi tecnici riscontrati durante il countdown.
La missione della sonda Parker Solar Probe è di avvicinarsi al Sole ad una distanza record di 6 milioni di km per studiare la corona solare e le tempeste magnetiche, per prevederne gli effetti sulla Terra e nelle missioni spaziali.
Parker viaggerà ad una velocità di oltre 600 000 chilometri orari battendo ogni record di velocità per un veicolo spaziale, arriverà in posizione all’inizio di novembre, dopo aver volato verso Venere sfruttandone il campo gravitazionale come una sorta d “freno a mano”.
La missione durerà 7 anni eseguendo 24 orbite intorno al Sole fino ad immergersi nella corona solare.
La sonda prende il nome da Eugene Parker, fisico che per primo teorizzò l’esistenza del vento solare nel 1958.
